Former Premier League winner Alan Shearer wants Spurs to stick with Ange Postecoglou despite poor start to the 2024/25 season

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has come under fire following a poor start to the season

Tottenham Hotspur have endured an underwhelming start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign and the pressure is on Ange Postecoglou to turn things around.

With four points taken from the opening three games, Ange Postecoglou and his side’s misery was compounded last weekend as fierce rivals Arsenal won 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and took home the bragging rights.

A win, a draw and two defeats isn’t the start Postecoglou would’ve hoped for after a strong transfer window that saw the club make five exciting additions. The 59-year-old, who has majorly cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines thus far this season, has been criticised by certain sections of the fans and media for his one-dimensional style of play. He is expected to stick to his principles of a free-flowing, aggressive and attacking style of football despite results not going in Spurs’ favour.

With seemingly no Plan B when things aren’t going in the right way, a few pundits have started to ask questions regarding the Greek-Aussie tactician’s position at the club so early in the campaign.

Former Premier League winner Alan Shearer has urged Tottenham to keep faith in Big Ange despite a rocky start to the 2024/25 season. He feels the Greek-Australian tactician deserves the board’s backing now after coming under a lot of criticism in the wake of Spurs’ derby defeat to Arsenal.

“Ange Postecoglou was brought into the football club because of his style of play and because of his beliefs,” Shearer told Betfair (h/t The Metro).

“It would be crazy for Spurs or Postecoglou to change that now, and he’s not going to. He plays with a high line, with his full-backs going into midfield and at times, the opposition will catch them out.

“However, from set-pieces, teams see that as an area to exploit. I don’t know whether that’s the goalkeeper, or the Tottenham set-up, but he’s not changing it.

“Let us not forget how Ange’s style worked for them in a lot of games last season and it was exciting football, but it is high risk. Sometimes fans have to be patient because it’ll work one week and maybe not so much the other.

“Spurs must stick with Postecoglou, there’s no doubt about it. Unfortunately, you know as a manager, and as players, that you have to deliver on the pitch and if you don’t, you’ll get criticised.

Truth be told, while this has been far from an ideal start to the season, the reality is that Tottenham have been in a slump for quite some time now. Big Ange is under pressure, and while respected journalist David Ornstein revealed on Wednesday that the club have no intentions of sacking him, the fact of the matter is football is a fickle game as things can change quickly here.

Nonetheless, Spurs must continue with our veteran tactician and give him time to get Spurs out of the bad patch. Having invested millions in the last few windows, there is no point sacking Big Ange after a poor run of form and disrupting the rebuild which the club are in.
