Tottenham Hotspur have a pool of gifted young players and academy products that Ange Postecoglou wants to develop by giving opportunities. The 59-year-old tactician has not hesitated to give the youngsters opportunities to express themselves since becoming the North London club’s head coach last year.

Spurs have also taken a long-term strategy and vision in terms of recruitment since the summer of 2023, with prodigious talents such as Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Min Hyeok-yang all deciding to become a part of the club’s project, although the latter is set to officially arrive in January after completing the season with Gangwon FC.

Ange Postecoglou is an experienced manager who has been in the game for a long time. The Greek-Aussie boss is perfectly aware of which youngsters can break into the first-team squad and which could do well with a loan. Thus, he sanctioned loan moves for quite a few academy talents and youngsters in the past summer transfer window. One of those was George Abbott.

Tottenham under-21 skipper George Abbott sealed a loan switch to League Two side Notts County on summer transfer deadline day. The teenage prodigy has made a solid start to his spell with Notts County.

After coming as a late substitute against Swindon Town, the defensive midfielder has delivered eye-catching performances in back-to-back wins over Accrington Stanley and Bromley. He started and completed 90 minutes in both games. George Abbott has shown early signs of his massive potential, playing a key role in Notts County’s flying start to the 2024/25 League Two season.

While Spurs have many academy talents out on loan in different tiers of English football and abroad, reliable Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold has suggested that Abbott may raise a few eyebrows with his development.

“George Abbott has played a couple of games now for Notts County and made his first start there the other day. He’s very much impressing everyone there,” Gold said on the Gold and Guest podcast.

“He’s only 19 years old, but he’s a Spurs under-21 skipper and very versatile. He can play pretty much anywhere across your midfield or back line.

“Towards the end of last season, I was told to keep an eye on George Abbott because he’s developed quicker than anyone expected.”

Abbott was an essential component in Spurs’ under-21’s Premier League 2 title-winning campaign and the youngster has seemingly been quite impressive within N17 over the last 12 months. This is his first real experience of men’s football, and going by Gold’s claims, the defensive midfielder has been performing extremely well in Notts County colours.

The Islington-born talent is grabbing the opportunities coming his way with both hands at Notts County and showing Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff what he can do in senior football. If Abbott continues to perform consistently, it would not be beyond the realms of possibility that Spurs recall him in January and loan him out to a League One or Championship club for the second half of the campaign.
