It was anything but an easy affair for Tottenham in their first Carabao Cup fixture against Coventry City last night.
After a goalless first half, Coventry’s Brandon Thomas-Asante opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, and it wasn’t until the 88th minute that Spurs came back into the game as Djed Spence scored his first goal for them. Brennan Johnson then completed the comeback for the Lilywhites with a goal in stoppage time.
Among the many Spurs players who took to social media to celebrate the win was one who would have played the game had an injury not kept him out.
Yves Bissouma cheers from sidelines as Tottenham reach Carabao Cup fourth round
Yves Bissouma kept his social media followers updated with his monitoring of Spurs’ third-round Carabao Cup win.
It was confirmed by Ange Postecoglou before the game that the Mali international would be rested for the cup game.
The 28-year-old picked up an injury while representing Mali during the recent international break, during a game against Eswatini. He has not featured for Spurs since but might be in line for a return during the weekend.
Up next for Tottenham is a home game against Brentford on Saturday.
Bissouma crucial for Spurs
Bissouma is clearly an important part of Postecoglou’s plans for the season, and with Spurs playing in Europe this term and needing to at least go deep in all their cup tournaments, it is absolutely imperative that the Malian stays fit for most of the campaign going forward.
Spurs do have able young deputies, but they wouldn’t want them to be overburdened this early in their career, especially with the manager’s demand for high-intensity football.
