Pundit praises Tottenham to in-form PL rival despite inconsistent performances

Tottenham Hotspur’s 2024/25 Premier League campaign has gotten off to a shaky start with Ange Postecoglou’s team struggling to find consistency.

Spurs, who are currently languishing 13th in the league table with just four points from their last four league games, the North London club are under increasing pressure. But despite all that has gone wrong, there remains a hope that better days may be ahead for the Spurs faithful.

Football expert Paul Merson provided his thoughts on the topic, claiming that Spurs have performed better than their league position suggests, and minor adjustments could propel them up the standings in the Premier League.

Merson compares Spurs to Newcastle

Merson backs Postecoglou’s project despite results

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Merson compared the Lilywhites with Newcastle United, and while Eddie Howe’s side sit comfortably in 3rd place with 10 points just behind Manchester City and Arsenal, Merson argues that Spurs have, in many ways, played better football in the ongoing campaign.

“Tottenham isn’t a million miles away,” he said. “They’ve played better than Newcastle, and Newcastle are unbeaten.”

Potential for Improvement

Despite a run of poor results thus far, Merson remains optimistic that the North Londoners will eventually see improved performances if they persist with their current strategy under Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham, however, has been one of those teams that has shown promise but has failed to deliver. They’ve shown flashes of brilliance, only to be let down by their finishing woes and defensive frailties.

With those aspects above their heads, they’ll be more than capable of climbing the table and making a real impact in the Premier League.

Give them a few adjustments and hopefully a bit of good fortune, and the North Londoners can turn the aching start around. The question here is: can the Lilywhites outfit convert these promising performances into enough wins to qualify for the Champions League campaign at the end of the season? Only time will tell.
