Tottenham Hotspur have incurred a difficult start to the season; however, one player who has endured equally difficult times during his stay in North London had his opportunity to redeem himself in the midweek, Djed Spence.
The majority of Lilywhites faithful expected the former Middlesbrough man to bid adieu to White Hart Lane in the recently concluded summer transfer window; however, he managed to survive. Spence impressed the staff at Hotspur Way with his performances in the pre-season campaign, as he not only won over the Australian head coach but also gave second life to his career at Tottenham.
From forgotten man to match-winner
Spence had been deployed out of his preferred right-back position in the preseason, and he still managed to get plaudits. However, the pre-season high didn’t last for long as the 24-year-old was excluded from Ange Postecoglou’s Europa League squad.
Although, as they say, diamonds are made under pressure, and Spence responded magnificently in his recent appearance for the Lilywhites, where he inspired a Spurs 2-1 comeback over Coventry City in the League Cup on Wednesday.
The £25,000-per-week star came on for Destiny Udogie as he scored Tottenham’s first goal in the 88th minute, with the North Londoners going on to win the tie in injury time, thanks to Brennan Jonhson’s goal.
Djed Spence speaks about his ambition
The defender sat down with the club’s official website and spoke about his first goal in Spurs colours. He used his words to acknowledge that he wants to be ready to play for the head coach when called upon.
Spence said:
“It meant a lot. It was a good feeling—especially to get the team back in the game and then the win.
“So, yes, the goal meant a lot. The manager said just to be ready (before I came on); that was it really. Change the game and hopefully get the win.
“I’m happy to be in the plans. I’m happy to keep moving forward with the team. Hopefully, we keep winning, and we can go on from there. I’m looking forward. I’ve just got to stay ready and be ready for whenever I’m called upon, like today.”

The former Middlesbrough man has rejuvenated his Spurs career, and he may go on to find a place in the Europa League squad in the second half of the season if he continues to put in such impressive performances.
