BBC pundit admits ‘weird’ VAR mistake in Tottenham vs Brentford

published :

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult start to their Premier League campaign; however, in a massive boost to confidence at Hotspur Way, the Lilywhites returned to winning ways against Brentford on Saturday.

The North Londoners came back to winning the tie 3-1 from 0-1 down against Thomas Frank’s side after Bryan Mbeumo put them a goal up just 22 seconds into the tie. However, Ange Postecoglou’s side came back from behind to win the game, with Dominic Solanke scoring their first goal in a Spurs shirt.

VAR fails to spot Vicario handling the ball

Although the game was filled with massive controversy that has got the fans lambasting PGMOL on social media.

The Lilywhites goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario seemed to have handled the ball outside the penalty box, and the referee didn’t give anything for the offence despite serious protests from The Bees manager Thomas Frank and Kristoffer Ajer. We have seen the keeper getting red carded for similar offences in the past, and the referee didn’t even call foul on the Italian yesterday.

It has been something the rival fans have been rightly angry about.

Pundit Nedum Onuoha in the post-match interview with the BBC expressed his shock at how the referee didn’t do anything about the incident. He found it a bit strange that VAR didn’t interfere as well.

Onuoha said:

“Earlier, Gugliemo Vicario comes out of his area and makes three attempts at touching the ball. From the angle we see the third touch, if there was another angle of it, I think they would say that it came outside the box, so that would be a red card.”

“It is strange that the VAR has missed that; very strange, because that is a big moment in the game.”

PGMOL under fire

The goalkeeper got very lucky yesterday, and this time it worked in Tottenham’s favour. But let’s be reasonable; the inconsistency by the refs in the new season has been baffling. Every matchday there are multiple errors from the match officials, and while it was on Spurs side this time, it could well be against the club the next.

FA needs to address this concern soon.
