Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been subject to excessive links to Real Madrid, which seems to have continued despite the conclusion of the summer transfer window. To put things into perspective, the Spanish giants have continued to scout the player, as they had a senior presence watching the Argentine in the Lilywhites last weekend fixture against Arsenal.
Romero has been an outstanding presence in the middle of the park for Ange Postecoglou’s side, and his leadership ability means the Australian head coach has promoted him to a vice captain role in Hotspur Way’s dressing room.
Romero desperation in Madrid pursuit
The defender has looked at home at White Hart Lane since his £42 million move to N17 from Atalanta in 2022, and he has established himself as not only one of the best defenders in the Premier League but also in Europe. And his stocks have increased in abundance over the past twelve months or so.
The World Cup winner is said to be desperate to move to Santiago Bernabéu if such an opportunity arises in the upcoming window. It’s his desperation to be involved at the ‘highest level’ that pushes his desire to don the Los Blancos badge.
Spurs to stand firm
However, the North Londoners are unwilling to sell the £100m centre-back, and Ben Jacobs gives his two cents on Spurs stand on the situation. The journalist expects Daniel Levy to stay firm with no real reason pointing towards a possible sale.
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs said:
“Spurs have no plans to sell Cristian Romero despite links with Real Madrid. There is no pressure to sell, or start new contract talks, because Romero is contracted until 2027.“
“Real are in the market for a centre-back because Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are both in their thirties, and the latter is out with an ACL. But Real haven’t made any approach for Romero to date, and if that changes in 2025, I expect Spurs to stand firm.“

“It is normal for new contract talks to start once a player has two years or less left, but right now Romero is not speaking to Tottenham or any other club, and it hasn’t even crossed Ange Postecoglou’s mind that the Argentine could leave any time soon.”
Show of confidence?
Tottenham and Levy will want to extend Romero’s contract irrespective of the pressure from Real Madrid as the 26-year-old has become an important part of the project at White Hart Lane. And losing him would be a big blow to the resilient defence that Spurs have built.
It is great to see Tottenham are not getting fazed by Madrid’s interest, this shows that behind-the-scenes there is a real belief in the project.
