‘Disappointed’ Tottenham ace takes responsibility for Spurs loss against Arsenal

published :

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has heaped praise on Lilywhites vice captain Cristian Romero, revealing that the Argentine had his hands up in the dressing room for the Spurs defeat against Arsenal.

Romero is an integral part of Spurs’ setup under the Australian tactician, but it’s his attitude that has really caught Postecoglou’s attention.

Despite few defensive lapses, including the recent loss to North London rivals Arsenal, where defender Gabriel Magalhaes evaded his attention to score the winner at White Hart Lane, Romero’s determination to learn from his mistakes is exactly the kind of mentality the boss wants to see in his side.

A rocky start to the season

Jamie Redknapp believes Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero struggles with man-to-man marking.
Cristian Romero has enjoyed a poor start to the season.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner had a bit of a tricky start to the new Premier League campaign, as he has been on the wrong end of some errors costing Spurs dearly. However, his ability to respond to those failures has been a key, reflecting his mentality to grow stronger from these moments.

The former Celtic boss was quizzed about whether Cuti Romerto took responsibility to play an ill part in what resulted in an Arsenal goal last weekend. Ange said: (via. Football.London)

“He is, and he wasn’t happy about it. He also knows these things happen in football, and it’s how you respond. I love him as a player and a person and the way he trains and conducts himself. He’s a winner.

“I was asked the other day if it’s important to have people in the building who’ve won things, and he’s the living embodiment of that, but it doesn’t make you bulletproof. You’ll have days when it doesn’t work out for you.

“He was disappointed he couldn’t do more in that space. It wasn’t just him though; it was a combination of things that cost us that goal and a combination of things that cost us that game. But it’s not like he’s gone into his shell afterwards. He wants to get back out there and make amends.”

What’s next for Romero?

With Romero’s importance evident, rumours have been circulating about his future at the North London club. Despite the speculation, it remains quite clear that the Tottenham boss values the Argentine’s contributions and presence at the heart of the defence, and the supporters would be hoping to see their vice captain come back stronger from the setbacks.

The Argentine will not have an opportunity to do so when Tottenham host Qarabag in the Europa League this Thursday as he will be serving a suspension after getting sent-off against AC Milan around 18 months ago.
