Tottenham Hotspur have returned to winning ways following a slow start to their Premier League campaign, and Ange Postecoglou’s side have continued to progress under the Australian’s head coach’s tutelage and despite signs of struggles at the start of the new season.
However, there are plenty of rays of hope, and we glimpsed that in the North Londoners recent win against Brentford at the weekend. A team is not made only by how they win but also by how they respond to adversities, and it looks like the Lilywhites have got a new man in the leadership circle in the disappointing times of the ongoing campaign.
A tough start at N17
Spurs started their season with a tough away draw against Leicester City; the club did follow it up with a win against Everton at Goodison Park. While the supporters thought that the team had gotten themselves together, Newcastle United happened, and an international break followed. This gave Tottenham an opportunity to regroup and re-access their season with North London Derby on cards.
Ange Postecoglou’s side went into the derby as favourites owing to a depleted Arsenal squad, but the Gunners found a way, and Spurs season was already heading towards nothingness.
The club were staring at another defeat against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup, but something sparked, thanks to Djed Spence. Tottenham scored an equaliser in the 88th minute and went on to win the tie in injury time. Confidence coming off such a fixture was high, and Spurs showed that against Brentford yesterday.
Vicario elevated to leadership role at Spurs
There have been changes in abundance at Hotspur Way since Ange Postecoglou took charge of proceedings at White Hart Lane. The Australian made a statement when he made South Korean ace Heung-min Son the skipper and promoted James Maddison and Cristian Romero in co-captain roles.
And now the former Celtic head coach has taken another bold decision. He has promoted goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in the senior role, per ever-reliable Spurs correspondence, Alasdair Gold.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the journalist said:

“I understand that over the summer, Vicario was added to the team’s leadership group. You might remember Spurs always had this leadership group in the past, which all of the players since have left. It was Kane, Hojbjerg, Lloris, of course, someone else I’m completely forgetting; even Skippy was in it as a young captain in the making, learning from the others. I don’t think Ben Davies was in it; pretty sure he wasn’t. Eric Dier was one of them.”
“So obviously, all of those players have moved on now, and you’ve got Son, Madison, and Romero. And from what I understand, officially Vicario was added to that in the summer to make up a fourth member, because he is seen as a leader, he speaks very clearly, and the players listen to him when he talks. He is a big voice in that dressing room, and he’s someone who’s been through a struggle, a battle in his career, and I think Postecoglou loves those kinds of players.”

Vicario has been an integral presence at Tottenham since his move to N17 from Empoli in 2023, and moreover, we have seen time and time again how he is a vocal presence at the back.
The Italian has established himself as one of the better keepers in the Premier League, and now it looks like he is set to have a leadership role at Spurs.
