Tottenham Hotspur have been subject to aggressive links with a move for a new central defender in the recently concluded summer transfer window, with ample of talented personnel rumoured to move to White Hart Lane. However, it was all talks and no show as nothing materialised, and Spurs come into the new season with the same defensive unit as the last campaign.
The North Londoners have a steady and successful duo of Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero and Micky Van de Ven. They have not only been successful individually but also brilliantly complement one another, which has laid the groundwork for one of the best central defensive duos in the Premier League.
However, Ange Postecoglou’s side lacks depth in the department, and that has been something that hurt spurs in the previous campaign. The Lilywhites only have Radu Dragusin as a natural cover, and in case of an injury or suspension to both, it would be difficult to keep the defence from leaking.
Tottenham’s failed pursuit of Buongiorno
Daniel Levy & Co. were looking at then Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno in the summer transfer window, per Calciomercato.
He had been one of the standout defenders in the Italian top tier last term and a key presence in Torino’s defence. His displays along the Serie A season had caught the eyes of multiple European elites, including Tottenham.
Torino League rivals Napoli eventually went on to sign the player in July after beating Juventus to his signatures. The player didn’t want to move to the Old Lady.

The report describes that Ange Postecoglou’s side ‘made a lot of progress,’ only to decide against his signing to focus on other targets.
It looks like none of those targets came good for Daniel Levy and his chiefs, and the Lilywhites concluded the summer without bringing in a new centre-back.
