Tottenham managed to get back to winning ways in the league last weekend with an ultimately comfortable 3-1 win over Brentford.
The start of the game did take them by surprise, however, as they conceded inside 30 seconds.
The forwards bailed Spurs out on the day, though their defence also managed to stay strong for the rest of the game.
Guglielmo Vicario left Alasdair Gold with mixed emotions after Brentford game
In his latest appearance of Football London’s Spurs podcast, Alasdair Gold praised Guglielmo Vicario’s performance against Brentford while admitting his mishap left him a bit concerned.
“Vicario made two really good saves during the game—especially the one from Schade’s header. His use of the ball with his feet was brilliant, apart from that one moment. A lot of the pressing relied on him picking out people with pinpoint passes. Vicario’s moment of madness—he juggled the ball, and his flappy moment outside the box should’ve been spotted by VAR.
“It’s as ridiculous as it was, handling the ball outside the box… but ultimately that’s as far as it should have gone, just a free-kick. Vicario is in this space now where he feels like he has to come out for crosses more, but it creates the odd flappy moment, like we saw.”
Vicario seemingly handled the ball outside his penalty area against the Bees but wasn’t penalised by VAR because he was deemed to not have stopped an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
Vicario has £75k-per-week deal at Tottenham that runs until June 2028.
Vicario a successor to Hugo Lloris in more ways than one
In VIcario, Spurs have essentially found a more contemporary version of Hugo Lloris, who is better than their former French captain on the ball but, just like him, is an exception shot-stopper with a hiccup in his game every now and then.
Vicario is going to have to iron out said hiccups out if he is to grow into one of the league’s best keepers, which is precisely what his team need in order to reach their goals in both the short and long terms.
