Tottenham beat Brentford in their recent Premier League outing.

Goals from Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, and James Maddison helped Spurs overcome their first-minute scare and put last week’s North London Derby result behind them.

After the game, Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold also made sure to commend Spurs’ other stars.

Cristian Romero key for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, says Alasdair Gold

In his latest appearance of Football London’s Spurs podcast, Gold praised Cristian Romero‘s performance at the back against Brentford, deeming him crucial for Spurs’ success in the long term.

“Their pressing was brilliant. I was so impressed with their pressing on Saturday; they just barely gave Brentford a chance to breathe. It’s no coincidence that all three of Spurs’ goals came from dispossessing Brentford and regaining the ball, and putting them away.

“Romero sprinted forward ahead of Son as if to say, ‘I’m taking this,’ and played a perfect pass into Son’s path. That’s exactly what Postecoglou wants from his players. Romero is so key in this system. He plays these forward-driving passes from the middle of Spurs’ half and breaks the lines with ease. Postecoglou’s system demands the ability to break the lines, and Romero does this really well, transitioning from defense to attack.”

For all his temperamental hiccups, the Argentina international remains one of Spurs’ first names on the team sheet and their best defender.

Romero has been also linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent months.

The 26-year-old has in place a £165k-per-week contract at Tottenham, which runs until June 2027.

Romero has played every minute of the 2024/25 Premier League season so far, having also scored a goal.

Have faith

Romero is unquestionably Spurs’ best defender. He does, however, need to surrounded by players at the back that complement his temperament. Doing this will help Spurs in the here and now as they go about finding themselves a Champions League spot and a trophy or not.

In the long term, when Real Madrid start sniffing around, we usually know exactly how that tale turns out. Expect Daniel Levy to get a good deal for him.
