Going into the summer transfer window, signing a new marquee striker was an undisputed priority for Tottenham Hotspur, and they did exactly so when Daniel Levy forked out £65 million to bring Dominic Solanke to White Hart Lane. The ex-Liverpool striker is expected to fill Harry Kane’s void in the offensive line at Hotspur Way; however, now a new concern has arose at N17; what about Solanke’s backup?
Richarlison has proven to be a frustrating figure off late owing to his injury problems that have kept him on the sidelines for the majority of the past campaigns and the ongoing season. To not have a reputable backup forces Ange Postecoglou to not only play Solanke more than desired but also takes away ‘Plan B’ in game.
The officials in the cubicles of Hotspur Way are already planning to hand the Greek-born tactician a new player to replace Richy and add that depth to the centre-forward position.
Spurs eye Calvert-Lewin as backup striker
One of the surprise names linked with a move to White Hart Lane is Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The England international has been pondering whether to extend his contract with the Merseyside Blues as his current deal runs out in under 12 months.
While Everton were pushing to have the 27-year-old extend his contract at Goodison Park, the striker is unwilling to commit to a new deal and keep his options open despite a new takeover twist that sees Dan Friedkin set to buy the Blues, per Football Insider.
Can Spurs overcome injury woes with DCL signing?
There is a belief that the striker is looking for a ‘display of ambition’ if he were to decide on his future, and what better club than Spurs to do so? The club is under an exciting project under Ange Postecoglou, and it’s one where the officials at the club are ready to invest in the squad and raise levels each summer.
However, with a player of DCL’s calibre available on a free transfer, he is expected to receive substantial interest from multiple Premier League clubs owing to his probable free agent status.
That being said, Calvert-Lewin has had his own share of injury concerns over the years, which have seen him miss a number of critical games for his current employers. This makes it a big red flag for Spurs after already having to deal with similar frustrations with Richy.
The ongoing season will prove critical to see if the 27-year-old’s injury concerns are behind him or they still continue to haunt him.
