Tottenham kick off their UEFA Europa League campaign on Thursday night.
Ahead of the midweek fixture, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou and captain Son Heung-min spoke to the media and addressed several matters.
One such matter was Son’s contract, which has entered its final year.
Son Heung-min provides update on contract situation
Son Heung-min provided an update on his contract situation while speaking at a pre-game press conference ahead of his side’s UEFA Europa League opener against Qarabağ.
“We haven’t talked (about) anything yet. It was very clear for me, I’m very focused for this season. At this age, every second is like a goal. Especially this season, we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I’m taking even more care about this.
“I’m just fully focused on this situation and this year. I just want to win something that everybody in this club and these players and all around deserves. That’s what I’m working for.
“In the future, you never know what’s going to happen. But I will make sure I give everything for this club. It’s almost ten years that I give everything. We’ll see what happens. I still have a contract with the club which is the main important thing. I just want to give everything while I have my contract.”
Son providing update on his contract situation, as quoted by Football London.
The South Korea international moved to North London from German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015 for €30 million. Now in his tenth season with the club, he has represented the Lilywhites 414 times across all competitions, scoring 164 goals and providing 86 assists.
The 32-year-old’s current Spurs contract, fetching him £190,000 per week, expires next June.
Son a player Spurs should keep
Son is at that age post which players usually stop getting long-term deals. But he is young enough to warrant a deal all the same.
Son has clearly left enough in the tank to stay at Spurs for a couple more years at least. More importantly, Spurs are going to need a high-profile senior player in the dressing room to serve as an example for everyone else, especially after the departures of Harry Kane last summer and Hugo Lloris earlier this year.
It would be very surprising on the club’s part if they do not offer Son a new deal in the coming months, unless the player decides to move elsewhere in search of glory ahead of his twilight years.
