Bold substitutions and a new Spurs hero: Three Talking points as Tottenham down Aston Villa.

Son Heung-min is arguably one of the best Spurs players of all time, certainly one of the best signings they have made in the past decade, especially in the post-Gareth Bale era.

As he prepares to enter the twilight years of his career, Son has one last opportunity to decide whether to continue at Spurs or earn one last big contract for a comparatively bigger club.

And there are fresh reports hinting at where his immediately future may lie.

Son Heung-min to have contract extended by Tottenham

As reported by The Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to trigger the extension clause in Son Heung-min’s contract.

The Spurs men’s first team’s captain’s contract is set to expire next summer. The player recently stated that no new talks had been held between himself and the club over an extension.

The 32-year-old has just begun his tenth season at Hotspur Way, having joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for €30 million.

Son has gone on to make 414 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions, scoring 164 goals and providing 86 assists. His current contract fetches him £190,000 per week.

A no-brainer

The recent departures of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris have made Son the senior voice in the Spurs dressing room. The club would rather not lose him at such a crucial juncture of their rebuild, which may well undergo another rebuild given how they fare this season.

Moreover, Son has not yet started showing signs of slowing down and can certainly continue delivering for Spurs over the next few years, especially in a central role.

Therefore, triggering the extension clause in his current contract is a no-brainer for Tottenham, as it buys them some time.
