Postecoglou heaps praise on Tottenham’s attackers
Tottenham Hotspur kickstarted their Europa League campaign with a 3-0 win over Qarabag on home soil. Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke scored once apiece to continue their good run of form while Pape Matar Sarr also struck besides the forwards.
Ange Postecoglou’s offensive department has finally started to click and is delivering the goods. Solanke has now struck twice in as many of his previous matches while Johnson has also responded to widespread criticism at the start of the campaign with an inspiring scoring run.
The Australian ensured that he gave the duo due credit after the Qarabag win as he spoke about their form, while also hailing Son Heung-min’s impact. Tottenham’s official website quoted him saying the following regarding the offensive trident:
“Yeah, I thought again Brennan was really important for us, particularly today going down to 10 men pretty early, we were going to need some attacking outlet and I thought he, Dom and Sonny provided that. Obviously we needed a goal and I thought it was a good first goal for us because we were with only 10 men, but we still pressed and forced a mistake and Brennan’s been good at taking up those positions and him and Dom have a good little sort of relationship there in terms of working off each other and he took his goal well. As you said, that’s three in three games for him, and long may it continue.”
At the start of the campaign, the biggest issue Tottenham faced was not being able to find the back of the net as they dropped points against the likes of Leicester City, Newcastle United and Arsenal in their first four matches of the Premier League.
They have visibly turned a corner in their last three matches, scoring eight times in the process, with their displays against Brentford in the league and Qarabag proving particularly impressive. The Coventry City performance was a scrap but the team showed its tenacity in attack as they stayed alive in the Carabao Cup, a competition in which they face Manchester City in the next round.
The way the team’s form in the final third has turned around this season also requires giving credit to Postecoglou, who admitted to the teething issues a relatively new-look Tottenham offence was facing and used the international break earlier in September to improve things.
