Tottenham Hotspur had been continually linked with Conor Gallagher for a couple of years, and while many thought Spurs were closing in on his signatures, journalist Matteo Moretto gives us a different insight. He insists that the North Londoners were never truly advanced in the race for the midfielder’s signature.
The 24-year-old England international has long established himself with a move to White Hart Lane; however, when push came to shove, he ultimately made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the recently concluded summer transfer window, putting an end to months of speculation about his future.
Spurs’ Gallagher pursuit was a rumor mill fantasy
While multiple lot of the Lilywhites faithful may have hoped watching Gallagher donning the Spurs badge, it appears that any potential deal was more rumour mill-generated fantasy than reality.
In a recent update provided on Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, Moretto insists that while Villa and Spurs expressed interest, neither club was willing to go overboard to attain his signatures. He also went on to acknowledge Chelsea’s intention of not letting the Chelsea graduate sign for Premier League rivals.
This is something that The Telegraph also headlined, suggesting that Daniel Levy & Co. never made their intentions known with a bid.
Was Gallagher a realistic target for Spurs?
Ange Postecoglou reportedly wanted a Conor Gallagher as he saw him as a perfect fit in his playing style. However, it looks like that was all banging on an empty vessel. That being said, the Australian would have loved having a grinding runner midfielder in his roster, and he would have pushed to bring him aboard if there would have been a glimmer of hope that Chelsea would sell to a Premier League rival for anything other than a hefty price.
Bringing in the Englishman would have given Ange much-needed competition for current midfield options Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur.
