Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been left confused and yet with fear following club captain Son Heung-min’s admission on his future at White Hart Lane. With his contract at N17 running down, the South Korean ace’s future has been up in the air, with many pondering if he’d continue at Spurs or if the ageing wide forward will move on from Tottenham.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Lilywhites Europa League clash against Qarabag, Son spoke about his current contract situation at Tottenham and confirmed that no discussions have taken place regarding an extension with the officials at Hotspur Way at the moment. This leaves his long-term future at the club in doubt.
Tottenham yet to discuss contract extension with Son
While speaking about his future, the player went on to emphasise his commitment to help Spurs to silverware in the ongoing 2024/25 campaign. And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano took to X, formerly known as Twitter, stating Son’s words:
“We haven’t talked [about a new contract] yet. It is very clear from me. I am very focused on this season. At this age every second is like a goal, especially this season we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I am taking even more care on this.
“I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everyone at the club deserves. In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it’s been 10 years I give everything.”
Son’s current £190,000-a-week contract at White Hart Lane is set to expire under less than twelve months (in the summer of 2025); however, Spurs do hold an option to extend it by an additional year, one that you’d at least expect Levy to take up.
Is this the beginning of the end for the former Leverkusrn star at Spurs?
Son is a key cog in Ange Postecoglou’s squad, and his importance has only increased since Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich departure. The South Korean ace moved to White Hart Lane in 2015 from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, and he has become one of Lilywhites most credible players in history. In the process of doing so, Son has also established himself as one of the most consistent players in the English top tier off late.

Securing his long-term future should be a top priority for Tottenham as of now. It not only would ensure a continued presence of a world-class talent in Spurs ranks, but it would also protect his transfer value should the club ever consider selling Son (which is much better than losing him on a free transfer).
At the moment, for Tottenham, the lack of progress in contract negotiations is concerning, especially given Son’s importance at the club, on the pitch and behind the scenes.
