Tottenham face Barcelona competition for Joan Garcia.

There have been major criticisms surrounding Guglielmo Vicario off late following his struggling start to the season; however, that has not stopped Ange Postecoglou from influxing him into the leadership group at Hotspur Way, and the Italian is showing why with his words.

The 27-year-old has laid his ambitions for the ongoing 2024/25 season, emphasising the importance of European football at White Hart Lane, a place where Spurs find themselves again following a fifth-place finish in the previous campaign to qualify for the Europa League, a competition that Vicario believes is crucial for a club of Tottenham’s stature.

Vicario sets ambitious targets for Spurs

Vicario speaks about ambitions at Tottenham.

In an interview ahead of Spurs UEL opener, the 27-year-old Italian shot-stopper spoke about Spurs’ ambitions for the 2024/25 campaign. Vicario’s words, as reported by transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, reveal hunger in the dressing room for consistent European involvement while acknowledging the challenges that come with a packed schedule.

Vicario said:

“We like to play every three days; that’s what we wanted. Last season, we were without Europe, and for a club like ours, it was difficult in terms of ambitions.”

“Away games take away a lot of energy; you have to be good at recovering mentally and be ready to get back into the game right away.

“We are a big club; it’s normal that we play to win matches. Getting into the top eight in the Premier League is an objective, even if it’s difficult because there are so many strong teams to face, so it will be a sporting battle.”

Vicario’s realistic optimism

The Lilywhites have incurred a slow start to their new campaign, accumulating just two wins from five outings in the English top tier, and despite this, expectations remain high at White Hart Lane.

The investments that Spurs have been making off late show their ambition to finish in the top four on a regular basis; however, that’s far from reality at the moment. And Vicario’s comments reflect realistic words yet lay down an ambitious outlook for Tottenham.

His emphasis on the importance of European football is in line with the club’s long-term vision as the North Londoners continue to invest and develop under Postecoglou.
