Tottenham’s goalkeeping dilemma deepens as Vicario injury fears emerge

Glen Hoddle slams Guglielmo Vicario for his inability to command the Tottenham Hotspur penalty area.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has been subject to massive criticism following his struggling start to the season that has been directly attributable to the Lilywhites slow start to the 2024/25 campaign. The Italian goalkeeper has been one of the better keepers in the English top tier since he moved to White Hart Lane last year.

However, Spurs goalkeeping unit is more than just the 27-year-old, and we saw a glimpse of the Italian international’s backup, Fraser Foster, last week. And John Wenham, owner of the popular Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, has expressed serious concerns about the club’s backup goalkeeper options following Foster’s performance in the League Cup tie against Coventry City.

Forster started between the sticks in the Spurs 2-1 win against Coventry, and he failed to impress in his first appearance in a year, and owing to his shaky display, Wenham has led to a call for his replacement while raising questions about depth in the goalkeeping department at Hotspur Way.

He insists that the club are one injury away from crisis if Foster has to take up responsibilities in between the sticks in case first-choice goalie Vicario has to putt out.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham said:

“Forster struggled against Coventry City. I know it was his first game in a year. However, it made me think to myself that we would be in serious trouble if Vicario were to get injured. What other top club is preparing that way? Where you know that you’re going to be targeted if your number one goalkeeper is out?”

Over reliance on Vicario?

To have a massive interval between the quality of the first keeper and the backup is a cause for concern as it puts Spurs season, or at least a part of it, on Vicario’s fitness. Moreover, the fact that he has been subject to links with a move away from the club for 2025 makes it critical for Tottenham to start looking for a considerable backup who can pick up the gloves in case the 27-year-old leaves.
