Tottenham visit Manchester United on matchday six of the 2024/25 Premier League season
Tottenham Hotspur face off against Manchester United on matchday six of the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday, 29th September, at 16:30 UK time, as they look to win their fourth successive game on the bounce after most recently beating Qarabag 3-0 in the Europa League.
Ange Postecoglou’s men have won just two of their last five matches this season in the English top flight but recent form suggests that their offensive woes are very much a thing of the past with Spurs having struck eight times in their last three matches in all competitions.
Manchester United’s form is not any better than the Lilywhites’ as the Red Devils also come into the fixture with just one win in their last three league matches. The test against Spurs is by far their biggest match of the 2024/25 season so far in any competition.
Team News
Manchester United
Manchester United’s injury woes are slowly but surely resolving. Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund are expected to return to the squad for the Tottenham fixture but it remains to be seen if either player starts having come off the bench for a very limited time in the Europa League in midweek.
Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Victor Lindelof are still on the sidelines though and will miss the game at Old Trafford. United have enough cover at the back to not be too affected by the absences of either defender.
Further forward, Kobbie Mainoo could return to the starting eleven after being rested against Twente in the Europa League on Wednesday. There could also be a place in Ten Hag’s line-up for Alejandro Garnacho on the right wing in the midst of Amad Diallo’s struggles in front of goal.
PREDICTED MANCHESTER UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Mainoo, Eriksen; Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho; Zirkzee
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be without Richarlison and Wilson Odobert for their trip to Old Trafford. Although Son Heung-min picked up a supposed injury in the midweek game against Qarabag, it did not seem too serious and his availability for the United match should not be a doubt.
There are likely to be three changes at the back from the Europa League game on Thursday, in which only Van de Ven started from the regulation defence. A majority of the secondary players from the team will drop out with the entire midfield likely to be benched as well.
Brennan Johnson, however, will start having scored once apiece in each of Tottenham’s last three matches in all competitions where Dominic Solanke also finally opened his account for the club in the Premier League against Brentford last weekend after his arrival from Bournemouth in the summer.
PREDICTED TOTTENHAM XI (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Maddison, Kulusevski; Johnson, Solanke, Son
Match-deciding duel
Diogo Dalot vs Brennan Johnson
Brennan Johnson has been Tottenham Hotspur’s most potent player over their last handful of fixtures. The Welshman has seemed like he is out to prove a point and could once again be decisive for the north Londoners on their visit to Manchester United if they are to pick up a win.
The 23-year-old will be up against a very good defender in Diogo Dalot and how he fares against the United full back will go a long way in determining whether or not Spurs pick up a favourable result. Johnson’s defensive attributes will also be put to the test as he will need to track back when Dalot makes his forward runs every now and then.
Prediction
Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur have looked far solid lately than they did in the initial weeks of the season but they have not done enough to convince fans that they can pick up all three points against Manchester United, especially away from home, although they should be able to find the back of the net against a relatively flimsy backline.
The Red Devils’ form is not much better than Tottenham’s and in different circumstances, they may have been second favourites to beat them. However, with a few injury returns and an offensive department that has started to click lately, a goal could be in their future although it remains to be seen if they can thwart Tottenham.
