A lot can be said about Cristian Romero, but no one can deny that he has been Tottenham’s best defender since arriving from Atalanta two years ago.
Despite his temperamental moments, Romero remains one of the foremost defenders in the Premier League as well as one of his country’s best defenders.
Which is why Spurs want to keep him around for longer.
Real Madrid want Cristian Romero, but know it won’t be easy
Football Insider reports Cristian Romero is set to receive a new contract offer from Tottenham amid Real Madrid links.
The Argentina international was subjected to interest from Los Blancos during the summer transfer window, though a move did not materialise, with the Lilywhites having placed a £150m price tag on the 26-year-old.
The 2022 World Cup winner has in place a £165k-per-week contract at Spurs running until June 2027.
Valued by Transfermarkt at €65 million, the two-time Copa América winner has played every Premier League game so far this season.
Maybe a deal that works for all?
Real Madrid usually get their man once he’s in their cross hairs. Likewise, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is usually capable of finding the best deal possible for a player he realises he’s not going to be able to keep for much longer.
With Romero accelerating towards his 30s, and the Harry Kane example too recent for anyone to forget, it is likely he won’t sign a contract extension, not a long deal anyway, in which case Levy may choose to sell him next summer to get maximum value.
