Tottenham Hotspur have endured an injury-prone start to their campaign, and that continued in the Lilywhites 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday when Italian defender Destiny Udogie pulled off just after 45 minutes.
It was a splendid game performance in the first half from the visitors, and Udogie was integral to that with his presence on the left flank. However, to aid United’s misery, the former Udinese fullback had to be subbed off owing to injury. His game could have been over much sooner, with the young Italian spending a lot of time on the ground as Djed Spence readied himself to replace Udogie.
The £75,000-per-week defender continued and almost found himself on the scoresheet before the injury was too much to take and the substitution was made at halftime.
Postecoglou plays down Udogie injury concerns
Following his substitution, the Lilywhites supporters have been concerned about the player and his injury status. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou spoke about the situation surrounding the 21-year-old, claiming there isn’t much to worry about.
Speaking in his post-game press conference (via. Football.London), the Australian said:
“Yeah, he was ok. I mean he felt something in his quad but he obviously finished the half, but we just thought at half-time no point, we’ve got to be careful about how much we push our players.“
“Obviously, Destiny had to come on pretty early on Thursday night, which wasn’t the plan and I would say Micky played probably more than we wanted him to.“
“So with those kinds of things, we just got to be really careful, and Djed did well when he came on so I thought it was just wise to take him off but we’ll see how it goes.”
Djed Spence seizes opportunity
In context for Spurs, it is splendid that Djed Spence, originally a right-back, has been performing impressively at White Hart Lane in the left-back role, and he could be ready to fill in when required. The former Middlesbrough defender has been finding his way to rejuvenate his Tottenham career, and this could be an opportunity for him to do so.

And for Udogie, the North Londoners faithful would be hoping that he is back in the starting eleven next weekend when Ange Postecoglou’s side face Brighton.
