Star Argentina forward Julián Alvarez was one of the transfers of the summer as he left Manchester to move to Atlético Madrid.
Despite being only 24 years of age, Alvarez is regarded as one of the most complete forwards in world football right now and has won every big trophy there is to be won in the game for both club and country.
In a recent interview, he named the defenders he likes facing the least.
Julián Alvarez names Cristian Romero one of the toughest defenders he has ever faced
In a recent interview with ESPN, Argentina forward Julián Alvarez named Cristian Romero as one of the toughest defenders he had ever faced.
Alongside his compatriot, The former Man City man also named Man United’s Lisandro Martínez (also a compatriot) and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
Romero’s stock continues to rise as he is slowly becoming one of the best defenders in the Premier League. His raising profile has also been helped by the recent interest in him from Real Madrid, but Spurs are reportedly not interested in letting him go for anything less than £150 million.
Valued by Transfermarkt at €65 million, Romero has in place a £165k-per-week contract at Tottenham which is set to run until June 2027.
Helping out a compatriot
Praising two of his compatriots was the easiest and most diplomatic thing Alvarez could have done in answering the aforementioned question.
It also helps that, for the moment, he does not need to face them in the league now that he’s in Spain.
He better be careful what he wishes for, though, because Romero may well arrive in Madrid to join Los Blancos in the near future.
