Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has been subject to links with a move away from White Hart Lane, as he is linked with Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane; however, the officials at N17 are not willing to let go of the Argentine defender as they look to keep hold of the World Cup winner with a new contract extension.

The former Atalanta player has developed leaps and bounds since he initially moved to Hotspur Way from Serie A, and that progress has replicated in Real Madrid’s interest. While many expected the Los Angeles keenness for the defender to end following the conclusion of the summer window, that has not been the case.

Spurs set to open new contract talks with star defender Cristian Romero amid Real Madrd interest

Former Tottenham player Paul Robinson believes that extending the 26-year-old’s contract at the club is good news at White Hart Lane. There are reports that Daniel Levy is in line to hand a new wage of £200,000 a week to Romero and make him the highest paid player at Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Robinson goes on to state a few things that Romero brings to the table alongside his leadership. He said:

“If you’re going to give a player a pay rise, you can’t do that without extending their contract, which is good news for Tottenham. He and Micky van de Ven have been key.

“He brings grit and determination, and that little bit of bite they might not have otherwise. I think he’s a leader on the pitch, though not vocally. To tie him down to a longer-term contract is only good news.”

The Argentine staying will be positive sign for club

For Tottenham supporters, having Romero’s presence at the heart of the defence for an extended period will make them less vulnerable defensively while also ensuring that the club has a ready-made skipper to take over from Son when the time comes.

While Madrid interest may tempt Romero to reject Spurs approach for a new contract, he can achieve a legacy at N17 if he stays put at White Hart Lane. But it will be very important to see how Ange Postecoglou‘s side progresses on the pitch in the ongoing season to push Romero to sign a new deal with a positive sign of things to come.
