Tottenham set to trigger contract extension for Son

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min’s contract is due to expire in less than 12 months. Precisely, their captain will be a free agent in June 2025 and that is a possibility which everyone involved in the club’s higher authority wants to avoid, especially for the £190k per week star.

Consequent to that, it has emerged that the Lilywhites are set to trigger a unilateral one-year contract extension on Son’s current deal which will see him remain at the club until June 2026 by which time he would nearly have turned 34 years old, according to Sky Sports.

Son has been one of the best Tottenham players over the last decade or so and signing his replacement sooner rather than later is a herculean task for the club. In saying that, a short-term extension on his current salary of would be good news for the board as well.

Daniel Levy would have enough time to study the options available in the transfer market over the next couple of years to replace Son. In the event of a player like Eberechi Eze arriving in 2025 itself, there would still be a year for him to learn from the South Korean before succeeding him.

Ange Postecoglou hopes Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min will return to action sooner rather than later.

So far this campaign, Son has struck just two goals and two assists in the Premier League across five appearances. As such, he has been far from his usual self but much like the rest of Tottenham’s attacking unit, he will be expected to bounce back to form after his return from injury.

Spurs are set to take on Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday, a fixture that Son will not be risked for. However, it is not ruled out that he returns for the visit to Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of the international break next weekend for the Premier League’s matchday seven clash.
