Micky van de Ven made sure Tottenham did not have to worry too much during their last week’s outing at Old Trafford.
A lung-bursting run from the 23-year-old culminated in a simple far-post tap-in for Brennan Johnson; Man United never really recovered from this early blow, and after going down to ten men before the end of the first half they only fared worse.
For his performances, Van de Ven has been garnering a lot of praise, and he can now add another former Premier League captain to his list of admirers.
Troy Deeney waxes lyrical about Micky van de Ven
In his recent column for BBC Sport, Troy Deeney singled out Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, praising his performances.
“This is the second time he’s been in my team of the week already.
“Defensively he’s just a joke, I’m so impressed. His pace gets a lot of plaudits but the way he defends, the way he sees situations and covers his full-backs is excellent.
“And obviously another assist to add to a clean sheet in the win at Manchester United, so perfect for him.”
Deeney on Van de Ven.
The young defender continues establishing himself as a dominant presence in the back for Spurs, his recent performance against Man United just another example of the pacey Dutchman’s ceiling and versatility.
Valued by Transfermarkt at €55 million, the Netherlands international has in place a £50k-per-week contract keeping him in North London until June 2029.
Van de Ven has earned his plaudits
Van de Ven’s pace is proving crucial not only in bailing Tottenham out during counter-attacks, but also helping them bypass opposition defences for a shock attempt at goal.
Of course, United’s perennially porous midfield needs to be acknowledged here, but credit cannot be taken away from the Dutchman for his attempt.
That been said, there will be many a tough challenges for him and Spurs in the coming months, and he’ll be needed at the his defensive best to bail Tottenham out.
