Tottenham Hotspur have endured a slow start to their 2024/25 campaign, and while they have found their groove off late, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has come into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, with many suggesting that the Lilywhites struggling start can be pointed towards him, at least to a certain extent.
On a fair note, the Italian goalkeeper has been one of the better keepers in the Premier League since he moved to the English top tier from Empoli in 2023. He has single-handedly changed the build-up phase at Hotspur Way and has ensured that the turnovers from Hugo Lloris were seamless.
However, he has been under the spotlight for his weaknesses off late. The 27-year-old has seen his fair share of problems in dealing with balls into the box, and John Wenham, owner of the Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has expressed concerns about the Italian goalkeeper as he insists that Ange Postecoglou & his team needs to work on Vicario’s weaknesses.
Spurs keeper under fire
In an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham expresses his frustration with the Spurs number one between the woodwork.
He said:
“It is a very frustrating situation with Vicario. He is quite rightly regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League. However, he has this issue with crosses coming into the box.”
“That is obviously problematic. Therefore, it is something that Postecoglou and his staff need to be working on.”
“Vicario is part of the leadership group behind the scenes, he is clearly seen as a key player. I do think that he is an outstanding goalkeeper, but this is something which needs to be addressed.”
Having Vicario sorted is important
Vicario is one the keepers that can be inconsistent at times and while he can put in world class displays at times, he does have to improve massively on multiple fronts if he is going to lead Spurs to competing for silverwares on regular basis.

Time and time again we have seen the importance of keepers in the defensive aspects, more recently with Arsenal and Ange needs to address this concern before it becomes a highlight problem.
