Tottenham Hotspur have done a wonderful job to bring some highly regarded starlets to Hotspur Way, and one of the finest works came when the Lilywhites secured the signatures of Lucas Bergvall back in January, when he was a wanted man.
The Swedish maestro was considered one of the best young talents in European football when the North Londoners decided to put their name in the hat to land his signatures. However, it was more complicated than it appears on the surface.
Barca knocking!
Spanish giants Barcelona were the front runners to his signatures, with the Catalan side inviting the player in January, and at one point Tottenham were regarded as ‘outsiders’ to his services. And while one of the highly renowned sides for their trust in young players and technical football were regarded as favourites, Johan Lange pulled an ace out of his coat to secure Bergvall’s services, per The Standard.
The Spurs chief is said to have played an integral role as he had continual conversations with the player and his family, laying down the club’s vision for him. The talks are said to be preliminary about Spurs style of play, and the Lilywhites sporting director explained how the player would fit into Ange Postecoglou’s setup.
Spurs pull off Bergvall coup
The teenager, alongside his family, visited Tottenham Way before meeting Barcelona, and Tottenham pulled all stops to ensure they convinced Bregvall.
The report adds that the player was ‘bowled over’ by Tottenham’s facilities and Postecoglou’s philosophy.
While we give the due credit to Daniel Levy, Postecoglou, and Lange, Tottenham’s Swedish contingent also played an important role in signing Bergvall, as Dejan Kulusevski and Spurs women’s coach, Robert Vilahamn, gave the player ‘the hard sell’ on Tottenham.
It is great to see how Tottenham worked to secure £15,000 per week maestro, and we have already seen glimpses of his potential at White Hart Lane.
