Tottenham Hotspur five game winning streak came to a close in most horrendous ways possible as the Lilywhites secured a humiliating defeat in hands of Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton as the Seagulls secured a comeback to triumph in a 3-2 win over Spurs.
The day was not as easy for the hosts, Ange Postecoglou‘s side secured a 2-0 lead in the first half and a dominant display going into the interval looked liked the game is done and dusted, but the Premier League showed yet again why it is the best league in the world as a twenty-minute spell took the game away from the visitors.
Brighton managed to turn the tide in a 18 minute spell which ended when former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck headed the ball into Vicario’s next to complete a three-goal comeback. However, that goal was more than the header by Man United graduate, Brighton’s Georginio Rutter smartly managed to put in a diving yet hopeful cross after outmaneuvering three Spurs players on the flank.
Danny was left unmarked as the cross came in as he ensured to put the ball in the net.
Alan Smith slams Tottenham for ‘unbelievable’ defensive lapse
Alan Smith expressed his critical view of the goal and he pin-pointed lack of effort from Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur to close down on Rutter. He insists that the failure to apply pressure helped him push to get in a game sealing cross.
Smith also went on to say that Ange Postecoglou’s side seemed to have lost their composure after conceding the third goal which further contributed to the ultimate result.
Smith said: (via. BBC Sport)
“How Rutter wiggled away from three players on the right hand side of the box is beyond me. He had no right to keep going Bentancur does nowhere near enough. Danny Welbeck cannot believe the space. He cannot believe he got a free header…Unbelievable! Who would have seen this at half time. Tottenham have lost their heads…Certainly lost their resilience.”
