Tottenham Hotspur just suffered a horrendous defeat against Brighton at American Express Stadium, and while none of the Lilywhites players can come out of the game with their heads held high, one of the players, Destiny Udogie, has been particularly cornered for extensive criticism.
It was a tale of two halves as the visitors enjoyed a dominant display before the halftime whistle, where they walked into the tunnel with a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison. While things looked like it would be a comfortable victory over the Seagulls, the Fabian side came all guns blazing in the second half, where they scored three goals in the space of some twenty minutes to complete a comeback and take all three points from the game.
Judging by the performance, many Spurs players can be singled out, particularly the back line, and Italian international Destiny Udogie seems to be the key culprit who faces criticism owing to his carelessness in possession and pointless errors.
Udogie blamed for Spurs’ defeat against Brighton
The comeback started with the former Udinese man, as his poor clearance led to Spurs scoring their first goal. Two former Lilywhites strikers, Dimitar Berbatov and Les Ferdinand, were discussing the mistake post-full time in Sky Sports.
Ferdinand said:
“He’s coming at it that way and because he’s left-footed, if he swings a left foot at it he puts the ball in his own net. So he’s trying to clear it with his right. He should do better in terms of defending it though.”
Dimitar Berbatov added:
“I think it’s a rookie mistake. He has games under his belt, he should do better. From there, everything went wrong.
“You’re a defender first and foremost, you have to defend. In this day and age, full-backs do go and attack, and the first thought might be to attack, but it’s about reading the game. You need to anticipate… you need to be ready no matter what. When you make mistakes, someone will punish you.”

Renowned Tottenham journalist Alasdair Gold also lashed into the player for his performance against Brighton.
For Udogie, he does have to take some responsibility for the goal as it gave some life to what was already a dead game, and for Tottenham, the good thing is Ange Postecoglou has a fortnight to recover and regroup as we go into an international break before they return to action.
