Tottenham Hotspur were close to losing a key member in Ange Postecoglou’s back room staff as Ryan Mason had been subject to links to take over Belgian side Anderlecht as the two-time Spurs interim manager was portrayed as ready to take up a full-time management role. However, in turn of events, the former Lilywhites midfielder decided against taking up the offer to join the Belgian top-tier side.
Mason is an important part of the staff at Hotspur Way, and it would have been a big blow if he had left. He has been at the club in a management role since he was forced to hang up his boots in 2018. Mason started in the academy and worked his way up to a first-team role. But it looks like the 33-year-old is getting to a point where he is ready for more.
Alongside Ryan Mason, Spurs and Ange Postecoglou have a talented bunch of staff at N17, with Spurs correspondent journalist Alasdair Gold speaking on Last Word on Spurs, insisting that beyond Mason there is another coach at Tottenham who has the potential to do great things. The journalist has been speaking very highly about Matthew Wells, who, like Ryan, is also a key member of the backroom staff at N17.
Alasdair Gold praises Wells and Lewis
Gold was not only praising Wells but also acknowledged that Matthew would go on to become a top manager some day. He also name-dropped Stuart Lewis, who is in the youth setup at the moment.
Gold said:
-> Tottenham ‘agreement’ touted as reason for difference-making star’s absence vs Brighton
“I’d also add to the ones to watch, Matthew Wells. He’s going to be a terrific manager at some point; he’s going to go on to do something. Stuart Lewis, who does the U18s as well, he’s another terrific up-and-coming coach as well.”
It is good for the Lilywhites to have one too many quality presences in the backroom staff as they look to build a strong foundation under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs, at the moment, need all of the aforementioned coaches to come together and try to come up with a plan to come on top of the Hammers when the Premier League resumes as pressure continues to mount on Ange Postecoglou.
