Pundit suggests £15m Tottenham player has peaked in terms of technique

Key takeaways as Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur wide forward Timo Werner has been subject to massive criticism from the Lilywhites supporters and beyond for his lack of clinical ability in front of goal, which ultimately cost Spur a win against Brighton as the Seagulls completed a memorable comeback against Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The North Londoners were in the driving seat for the game when they went 2-0 up going into halftime; however, Fabian Hürzeler’s side came out all guns blazing as they notched three goals in the space of some twenty minutes to secure all three points.

Timo Werner renewed his loan at White Hart Lane in the recently concluded summer transfer window, with the Lilywhites holding a £15 million buyout option for his services. However, his return to N17 hasn’t reaped any dividends just yet, as he is yet to score a goal in the 2024/25 campaign.

And Don Hutchison thinks that the German international has reached his peak while insisting that his lack of clinical presence is a technique thing, acknowledging that Spurs signed him to stretch the games from the left flank rather than scoring goals.

Speaking on The Gab and Jules Show, Don Hutchison said:

“I don’t want to be unkind to Timo Werner, but you sort of can’t help it, because you want him to succeed.

“He’s not a bad player, he’s got loads of strengths, in that Man United game he could’ve scored three or four. There was one moment in that game that summed him up, he ran 50 yards and all he had to do was find a Spurs player, he missed them both and found a Man United player.

“It’s a technique thing, at his age he won’t find the goals because he’s proven that he can’t finish, but he stretches games, that’s why Spurs signed him.”

Werner had divided the fan base when he initially moved to White Hart Lane, and he appears to do the same even now. It is important to remember that he is a backup to Heung Min Son, and as a bits-and-parts player is not a bad option to have on the roster. Moreover, the German’s minutes will soon depreciate as Spurs academy star Mikey Moore comes into limelight.
