Alasdair Gold breaks down Tottenham’s "horrible second-half performance" against Brighton

Every aspect of Tottenham’s football under Ange Postecoglou has once again been put under the microscope after their last week defeat to Brighton

However, according to one pundit and former player, Tottenham have the ingredients to get at least one monkey off their back this season.

In a recent appearance on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel dedicated to all things Tottenham, talkSPORT pundit and former Lilywhite Jason Cundy discussed, among other things, the possibility of Tottenham ending their silverware drought under Ange Postecoglou.

“He might win a cup because you can get lucky playing that way. But you’re not going to win the league like that. You need a more balanced approach.”

Famously, Tottenham have not won a trophy in competitive football since 2008, when they lifted the League Cup under Juande Ramos.

As far as their silverware prospects for this season are concerned, Spurs lie eight points off the top in the Premier League after seven rounds of games, are in the fourth round of the League Cup in which they’ll host Man City at home later this month, have started strongly in the Europa League with two wins in two and are in the direct-qualifying spots, and of course the FA Cup proper will not commence for them until January.

After the international break, Spurs return to the Premier League as they face West Ham at home.

A big ask

It is pretty clear at this point that Tottenham’s performances will fluctuate too much over a league campaign under Postecoglou for their fans to be able to hope for anything more than a top-four finish—that too if they get lucky.

In cup competitions, however, because of the one-off nature of knockouts ties, teams both strong and weak on paper, regardless of their preferred style of play, keep an open mind towards playing pragmatically and seeing the tie through. This, of course, is something we have seen Postecoglou simply refuse to do.

So, one wonders how long the Spurs trophy drought will actually continue.
