Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been facing massive criticism off late owing to his inconsistent displays for the North Londoners in the 2024/25 campaign.
While the centre-back established himself as a core player in Ange Postecoglou‘s side in the previous season, he has not been able to replicate his performances in the ongoing campaign. Many thought he would take his game to the next level following the links to Real Madrid; however, it has been the other way around for the £165,000 per week defender.
He has endured multiple slip-ups leading directly to opponents goals, and some Lilywhites faithful have started questioning if he should be given a reality check when Spurs resume Premier League duties against West Ham. However, Tottenham correspondent journalist Alasdair Gold suggests that if it were up to him, he would not consider benching the Argentine.

He also pointed out the fact that the former Atalanta defence will only feature once for Argentina in the ongoing international break, rather than two, and he will likely arrive fresher than others.
When quizzed about whether Romero needs to spend some time on the bench, the journalist said: (via. Football. London)

“I still wouldn’t drop him because I think (the Arsenal goal aside) he’s got the mentality you need for a derby match. Romero also being suspended for Argentina’s first game means he’s got a good week’s break, albeit then having to rush back from the second game.“
“Postecoglou will check on his physical condition in the days ahead of the game, but I think he’ll be wary of leaving him out for this one when he can do that against AZ.”
Romero brings something more than just a football side; he is also a leader on the pitch, and Spurs need more of those figures to step up when backed among the corner.
