Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been subject to links with a move away from White Hart Lane, as the Argentine defender has been attributed with rumours about a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid. The Lilywhites vice captain was involved in summer-wide rumours surrounding a move to Los Blancos; however, nothing materialised, and Spurs supporters could breathe normally.
Albeit, Florentino Perez hasn’t stopped his pursuit of the World Cup winner, as he can continue to aggressively scout the player in a bid to land him in the 2025 windows.
Spurs hold firm on Romero’s future
It would be a cause of concern for the North Londoners, as Romero is an integral part of what Ange Postecoglou is building at N17. On the pitch, his partnership with Micky van de Ven is regarded among the best in the English top tier, while off the pitch, he is a respected presence in the dressing room.
However, regardless of admiration from their Spanish counterparts, the Lilywhites have no interest in letting go of their star defender, per The Mirror (via. Football.London).
-> Tottenham nearly signed this £32 million striker instead of Solanke
That being said, things get complicated as the player is not ready to rule out a move to Real Madrid and his contract at White Hart Lane runs down in two seasons’ time, giving him the leverage to push the North Londoners into selling.
Can Tottenham hold onto Romero?
Knowing how difficult it is to deal with Daniel Levy, Madrid have kept their options open and alternatives set as they have identified Arsenal centre-back William Saliba as a possible target alongside Napoli defender Rafa Marin, whom Madrid sold to the Italian side last summer; however, they do hold a buy-back clause, which gives them a fallback option should their pursuit of Romero lead to nothing.
For Romero, he needs to focus on the task at hand at White Hart Lane at the moment, as his defensive slip-ups have cost Tottenham too much already and the transfer situation can be dealt with after the conclusion of the season.
