Tottenham need to evaluate the futures of six players

Tottenham Hotspur have some work to do in the next few months because the futures of as many as six first team players are about to go up in the air if they do not act in time, as per data from Transfermarkt.

The board will need to open negotiations regarding a contract renewal with the players they wish to have aboard for the 2025/26 campaign and probably beyond, while the bad news about intending to part ways will also need to be told to those who will not be in their plans going forward.

Heung-min Son

Heung-min Son is by far the biggest Tottenham Hotspur name whose contract is in the final months and is arguably the last player they can afford to lose on a free transfer in 2025.

Though he is aged 32, Son remains perhaps the best player on Ange Postecoglou’s roster and has at least a couple of years more in the tank at the highest level.

Spurs have an option to unilaterally trigger a one-year contract extension in their current agreement with him and it is no-brainer that they will do so in order to secure his short-term future at the very least.

Ben Davies

In 2025, Ben Davies will enter his eleventh year as a Tottenham player and over the decade he has spent in north London, the Welshman has proven his reliability and loyalty to the club.

The 31-year-old is not the biggest of names on paper or from a marketability standpoint but remains a favourite within the Spurs fanbase and that speaks volumes of what he means to the club.

This season, he has been playing second fiddle to Destiny Udogie and is likely to be offered another short-term contract to prolong his association with the Lilywhites.

Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon has largely been on the peripheries at Tottenham not just this season, but previously as well. Three loan spells have not been enough in granting him a path back into Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

The former Real Madrid star struggled to find a club in the recently concluded transfer window and the door to depart Hotspur Way will open for him in January as well.

It can be set in stone that Reguilon is not going to be offered a contract extension and will be free to find a new employer from January. It would perhaps be even better if he does so in the transfer window for all parties involved.

Fraser Forster

Fraser Forster is the back-up goalkeeper behind Guglielmo Vicario. The 36-year-old has not spoken negatively about his secondary status at the club and with his age in mind as well, he is likely to be content with the role he is playing at Tottenham.

Forster is an experienced campaigner and is expected to be offered another short-term contract extension, although that is still only an assumption at the moment because a young goalkeeper’s development from the academy or availability in the transfer market could shake up such plans.

Alfie Whiteman

Alfie Whiteman is aged 26 and is the third-choice goalkeeper at Tottenham behind both, Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster. As he enters the best years of his career, the Englishman will need to find regular minutes and doing so at another club remains his best option.

Spurs are unlikely to offer him a contract, whereas even if they do in the event of wanting to maintain a younger squad by bidding farewell to Forster, they will happily accord with Whiteman’s desire of pursuing regular minutes at another outfit.

Timo Werner

Timo Werner’s deal is a loan that expires at the end of the season. Unfortunately, it does not look like Tottenham will trigger their option to make the deal permanent, especially if they are bolstered by an injection of funds possibly through Amanda Staveley’s investment.

The German has played regularly in Heung-min Son’s absence from injury but has failed to impress. He has not been the worst player on the pitch by any means but his lack of confidence in front of goal has poured water over all the other good things he has done.

Werner will need to do exceptionally well in the season that still remains or be prepared to accept a secondary role as Son’s back-up if he wants to stay permanently in north London.
