Ex-scout makes release clause claim for Tottenham vice-captain

Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has been subject to links with a move away from White Hart Lane, as he is linked with Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been subject to links with a move away from Hotspur Way as the likes of Real Madrid express interest in landing his signatures. The Argentine World Cup winner has been an integral part of Ange Postecoglou’s project and has taken massive strides since moving to North London.

Romero has been one of the best centre-backs in the English top tier since he moved from Atalanta, and his partnership with Micky van de Ven is equally accredited owing to everything that he brings on the table.

Ex-Scout speaks on Romero release clause

Can Tottenham resist Real Madrid’s lure for Romero?

However, the Lilywhites are staring at the possibility of Real Madrid taking over their vice-captain in the near future. To fuel rumours of a Los Blancos transfer, there were claims that the Argentine has a £54 million release clause in his current deal at White Hart Lane. However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano was quick to deny such reports, terming them as false.

And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King now suggests that if there were a release clause in the former Atalanta’s defender contract at Spurs, it would be at least £75 million given his quality. He also claims that it would be up to the club and head coach Ange Postecoglou whether the CB moves away from N17 or not.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:

“Romero is under contract, which means the club and Postecoglou will decide when it is time for him to leave. He cost more than £40million. Therefore, he is never going to leave for £54million, especially not after winning the World Cup.

“If there was a release clause, it would be far bigger than that. We’d be talking a minimum of at least £75million, especially in today’s market.”

For now, Romero remains an integral presence at Tottenham as they prepare to face West Ham when Premier League football resumes and Spurs look to get back to winning ways following that horrendous defeat against Brighton before the international break.
