Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes as he continues to impress in the French top tier.
There is a dire need for a new midfielder at White Hart Lane as the North Londoners are yet to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Gio Lo Celso after the veteran duo departed in the recently concluded summer transfer window. While it was among the plans to sign a new maestro, multiple links with marquee players followed, albeit to no conclusion.
And the Lilywhites are now looking to set the ball rolling once again as they target the England international, who has taken massive strides in his game over the past couple of years. The fact that Gomes is available on a free transfer makes Spurs case more compelling, as they may sign a high-potential young player with commendable experience for essentially nothing.
However, it is not as easy as it sounds, as multiple Premier League heavyweights are interested in landing the 24-year-old in 2025.
Maddison’s presence could block Angel Gomes move?
Giving a detailed view of the situation, former Spurs scout Mick Brown insists that his former employers are unlikely to make a move for the United academy graduate despite his contract’s state of affairs, in a latest by Football Insider.
Brown goes on to explain that James Maddison’s presence in the dressing room at Hotspur Way, alongside the role he plays under Ange Postecoglou, makes it highly unlikely for Daniel Levy to pursue Gomes’ signatures.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, Mick Brown said:
“I don’t think Tottenham are among those interested. They’ve already got James Maddison who can play a similar role. I would see those two as being not too dissimilar. I know Gomes plays a bit deeper but we’ve seen Maddison drop into that space in recent games.
“They’re both players who want to see a lot of the ball and look to make things happen, they’re clever passers and good in possession. I’d be surprised if Tottenham made a move for Gomes because of that.
“Angel’s skill has never been in question, the only concerns are about whether he’d be physically good enough to keep up in the Premier League. I’ve heard there are clubs looking at him and his contract situation, not just Tottenham.”
Angel Gomes is a massive talent, and Spurs need to find a way to get a back up to Maddison, and hence that makes sense on paper. However, we will see what happens when the winter window draws close.
