Things continue being interesting in the world of Guglielmo Vicario, it is safe to say.
Ever since arriving in North London, Vicario’s stock has risen, but with the added visibility has also come his way a lot of scrutiny.
Many have been praising him, many have been criticising him. While some think he’s not good enough for Spurs, there have also been reports linking him to a move up the ladder.
And according to one former Italy goalkeeper, Vicario should be his country’s first choice.
Filippo Galli deems Guglielmo Vicario better than Gigi Donnarumma
Speaking recently on Italy’s goalkeepers, Filippo Galli called Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario his preference for the national team over Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“Vicario has become a starter at a great level. Today, we can say that he is established, ready and very strong.
“Vicario, without a doubt [should be Italy’s number one]. He’s my prototype of a goalkeeper.
“For me, [Donnarumma] is very good, let’s be clear. But he lacks that touch of elegance. That which De Gea has, who is also beautiful to look at as well as strong.”
Galli, as quoted by TBR Football.
Vicario also recently came under criticism for a blunder that allowed Israel a goal in Italy’s recent win.
The 28-year-old has, though, kept clean sheets in the other two games he has played for Gli Azzurri.
Stylistically, yes
Vicario fits the mould of the modern-day goalkeeper profile better than Donnarumma.
So it’s quite an interesting take from Galli to compare his “elegance” to that of David de Gea, who himself has famously been a keeper of yesteryear for a few seasons.
Donnarumma is revered as a national hero for his Euro 2020 performances, though, so Vicario has some way to go before he gains the kind of adoration the 25-year-old has.
