Alasdair Gold breaks down Tottenham’s "horrible second-half performance" against Brighton

Tottenham have had to sit for two weeks lamenting the comeback defeat against Brighton before they can go back to the pitch to make things right.

Since the defeat, Ange Postecoglou has been on a media spree talking about many things while also having to deal with the criticism his mixed results have brought him.

However, his take on how the modern players deal with deflating results is refreshing and worth echoing.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his side’s Premier League game against West Ham, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou discussed, among other things, the way in which players react after a result doesn’t go their way.

“You know, I think every manager thinks that after a loss, every player should be throwing stuff around the changing room and kicking their bag. But players react differently.

“I’ve learned to understand that and kind of embrace that. It doesn’t mean people don’t care or it doesn’t mean people aren’t passionate about it. It’s about understanding the individual.

“Whilst we work in a collective sense, I try to treat every player as the individual they are.”

Of course, Spurs have had to sit on a bad result themselves, and Postecoglou has admitted he’ll let his players know what he made of the Brighton defeat as they return from the international break.

The Lilywhites welcome West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when club football returns this weekend.

All people are different people

We see people in the media—dinosaurs, let’s call them—who believe that throwing a tantrum after a defeat, beating yourself up, and shutting yourself from the outside the world is the only acceptable way to get over the loss.

It’s not. People react to things in different ways and that should be recognised and worked with, not condemned. That Postecoglou gets this is testament to his man-management skills and a reminder that we need more people like him in the public forums to advocate for the players.
