Real Madrid connection ruled out as Tottenham seal contract extension

Out of favour Tottenham defender Djed Spence set to leave exit looms

Djed Spence was handed a new contract extension until 2028 but it is not remotely related to Pedro Porro’s links with Real Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur surprised many earlier this week by announcing that full-back Djed Spence has penned a new contract extension until 2028.

The news came out of nowhere for Spurs fans. As recently as this summer, Djed Spence’s Tottenham career was as good as over. The former England youth international’s move from Middlesbrough in 2022 hasn’t quite worked out. He was limited to sporadic appearances at the club and spent the last 18 months out on loan, the latest having come at Serie A side Genoa in the second half of last season.

Elsewhere, Pedro Porro has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Real Madrid of late. There has been intense speculation surrounding the Spaniard’s future at White Hart Lane, so a fringe player like Spence signing a new deal at the club was certain to cause some hullabaloo.

However, John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, feels Spence’s new contract has nothing to do with Porro-Real Madrid rumours. He believes the new contract extension handed to the 24-year-old is just part of an “incremental increase.”

“I don’t think Spence’s new contract with Tottenham is linked to Porro at all,” John Wenham said in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News.

“This is only an additional 12 months which has been added to Spence’s deal. Therefore, it is probably just an incremental increase.

“It was probably an agreement in his original contract which would see the deal automatically renew when he played a certain number of games or was at the club for a certain amount of time.

“I more saw it like that, rather than Ange Postecoglou or the club wanting to reward Spence. It is only an additional 12 months. Spurs could have extended it further if they wanted to.

“It is probably an incremental increase and an extra £10,000 per week maybe, I don’t see it being anything much more than that.”

There appears to be some meat in Wenham’s latest claims about Spence’s new contract and Porro’s exit links to Real Madrid. Spence previously had a contract at the club until 2027 and the extension sees it take a year further.

Porro, meanwhile, has caught Real’s attention with his dazzling displays in Tottenham colours. He has established himself as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League in the last 12 months. The La Liga heavyweights have been left light in the right-back position following Dani Carvajal’s serious knee injury and have made the Spurs star one of their targets to replace him next year.

Spurs are understood to have started working behind the scenes to hand Porro a new contract in the New Year to fend off Real’s interest. Whether our right-back agrees to a new contract or leaves the door wide open for a move to Santiago Bernabeu remains to be seen.
