Tottenham midfielder James Maddison would love to swap shirts with Argentina legend Lionel Messi
Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison is rated as one of the best creative midfielders in the Premier League of recent times.
Since arriving at Spurs from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, the England international has been one of the first names on Ange Postecoglou’s teamsheet. His vision, dynamism, flair and eye for goal has taken the Lilywhites’ attack to the next level.
Despite starting the 2024/25 campaign very well, James Maddison was once again snubbed by England for their UEFA Nations League fixtures during the recently concluded international break. This allowed the 27-year-old some time off and he chose to be a part of TNT Sports’ 20 Questions segment.

In the TNT Sports’ 20 Questions segment, Maddison was asked about a wide range of topics including the Greatest Premier League Player ever, his most famous phone contact and the best Darts player at Tottenham. When asked about any player in the world he could swap shirts with, the midfielder replied:
“If I could swap shirts with any player in the world, it would be Lionel Messi. I think it would take pride of place on the wall.”
Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest player to ever grace the game. The Argentinean superstar claimed a record-breaking eighth Ballon d’Or last year after finally lifting the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar. He played a key role in his nation’s triumph over France in the World Cup final, winning 4-2 on penalties following a 3-3 draw. Messi scored twice and converted his penalty kick to help Argentina secure the gold.
Thus, we were not surprised by Maddison’s prompt answer when asked about a player he would love to swap shirts with. Of course, the English midfielder would have also loved to play with the Argentinean genius.
Meanwhile, Spurs are back in Premier League action after the end of October’s international break. They went into the break as dejected souls having lost 3-2 to Brighton away after being 2-0 up at half time. The result was a tough pill to swallow for Ange Postecoglou and the fans.

Ange Postecoglou will be seeking a stirring response from his boys against West Ham United in the mouthwatering London derby at home on Saturday. Maddison, who has had time to rest and recuperate during the international break, will hope to put in a strong display and help Spurs get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
