Tottenham star Brennan Johnson has enjoyed an upturn in form of late
Tottenham Hotspur recorded an emphatic 4-1 win over West Ham United in Saturday’s lunch-time Premier League kick-off.
Spurs were once again dealt an early setback when they conceded just 18 minutes in, but the player regrouped and turned the game around much to the delight of the White Hart Lane faithful.
Brennan Johnson didn’t score against West Ham but he is starting to fulfil the potential that many envisaged. Despite firing blank, the 23-year-old earned high praise from his boss Ange Postecoglou. The Greek-Australian tactician felt the winger produced his best performance in a Spurs shirt in the 4-1 win over the Hammers.
Before the West Ham game, Brennan Johnson was on a dream goalscoring run after a difficult start to the season. The Wales international decided to delete all social media accounts following excessive online abuse and criticism after struggling to find the net in the opening weeks of the campaign.

The winger’s goal in Spurs’ shock 3-2 loss to Brighton before the international break saw him match our club legend Harry Kane’s record of scoring in six successive games for Spurs across all competitions. After contributing with six goals in 11 games across all competitions, Johnson has credited assistant coach Ryan Mason for his upturn in form.
“Last season most of my goals were kind of at the back post as we work on a lot of crosses and I’ll always have it nailed in me to get in there because l know there are goals to be had, like the one against [Manchester] United,” Johnson explained to Football London.
“I want to show a bit of everything to be honest and want to keep doing what I’m doing at the moment. Obviously, if I can keep building and adding extra parts to my game then I will do that.
“I’ve been working with the coaches here and especially with ‘Mase’. He’s been doing a lot of work with me on picking up positions, the different types of finishes, what kind of part of the foot I’m hitting with and also dribbling and then shooting, so a lot of thanks must go to him because he’s been helping me a lot with that.”
It seems Johnson has worked closely with Ryan Mason on the training pitch on various aspects of his game and it has resulted in the winger scoring seven goals in eight appearances for club and country. The Welshman’s work rate and contributions in both attacking and defensive phases make him a key player for Big Ange.
Huge credit to Mason for helping the £70,000 per-week star overcome all the online toxicity and channel his energy into doing the right things. The work he has put behind the scenes has certainly paid off, with Johnson now becoming undroppable from Big Ange’s first XI.
Recently, Mason had been linked with a move to Anderlecht, with the Belgian side desperate to land the Spurs assistant manager in a permanent managerial role. However, the former Tottenham midfielder has decided to stay at the club after talks ended between him and Anderlecht.
