Tottenham bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League by beating West Ham 4-1 at home
Tottenham Hotspur players had gone into the international break dejected after losing 3-2 to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
So, Ange Postecoglou had asked for a stirring response from his boys when they faced cross-town rivals West Ham United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League last weekend.
As often is the case at Spurs when playing in front of the home fans, Ange Postecoglou’s side came from behind to register an emphatic 4-1 win over West Ham. Mohammed Kudus had given the Hammers a shock lead but Tottenham responded strongly as strikes from Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, Heung-min Son and an own goal from Alphonse Areola sealed the deal, leaving them seventh in the league standings.
Football London correspondent Lee Wilmot was delighted with Tottenham’s strong riposte against West Ham after the Brighton disappointment. He explained it was just the “perfect” response on Saturday and one that would do a lot of good to the Spurs players’ confidence levels.
“Well, yeah, that was just the perfect response really, and the one Ange Postecoglou and these players very much needed,” Lee Wilmot said in the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast.
“A perfect response. I thought they pretty much controlled the game from start to finish against West Ham, with just the blip of the goal obviously. But you’re never going to get a Spurs game where we’re going to control everything and have everything our own way. They were fantastic on the day and that’s just what they needed to do after that Brighton game.”
Indeed, it was a near-flawless response from Spurs to the Brighton setback, smashing the listless Hammers 4-1 at home. Were it not for the shocking capitulation at Brighton just before the break, Tottenham’s season would probably be being talked about from a different angle right now.
Barring the 3-2 defeat at the Amex Stadium, which was one of the lowest points in Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs career, the Lilywhites would be on a solid winning run, having only otherwise tasted defeats to Arsenal and Newcastle United. It also speaks about the growing mentality and togetherness within the squad, showing they can make comebacks and will not be sucked under relentless pressure from the British media.

The big win over Julen Lopetegui’s side last time out gives Big Ange’s men a platform to build from. With AZ Alkmaar next in the Europa League, Spurs players will be heading into the game confident of taking all three points.
