Postecoglou reveals Werner is lacking in confidence
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou spoke to the media after his side’s 1-0 defeat of AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League at home on matchday three of the Europa League on Thursday. The Australian was quizzed about one of the team’s biggest underperformers, Timo Werner, who remains without a goal over two months into the campaign.
The Australian provided an honest update on the former Chelsea star and revealed that as suspected, he is lacking in confidence. Speaking on the issue, Postecoglou was quoted saying the following words by Football London.
“It’s hard to say but he’s definitely down in confidence, you can see that. It’s a difficult thing to get out of sometimes. All we can do is support him and get him to a place where he feels more confident. He played a great ball in for Mikey early. He needs to find a way out of it because for us in those positions we need players to make an impact.”
Timo Werner has been provided with a reasonably long rope by Postecoglou, though a part of the manager’s decision was also influenced by the fact that the likes of Heung-min Son, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert were missing from action over the last few weeks. One of Werner’s most productive performances over his run of consistent minutes came in a 3-0 win over Manchester United last month, although even that was overshadowed by some poor finishing in the final third.
By Postecoglou’s words and to Werner’s good fortune, it does look like the manager is willing to place his faith in the forward in spite of his recent form. Understandably, spots in the starting eleven may be hard to come by for the German international but he is likely to have minutes under his belt off the bench, perhaps more so in the domestic cups.
