The Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris was the talk of the town on Monday night. Manchester City midfielder Rodri was awarded the Ballon d’Or after an incredible season that saw him pick up silverware with both club and country. He received the award at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, France.

The Spanish defensive midfielder lifted his fourth straight Premier League with Manchester City in May as Pep Guardiola’s side held off Arsenal’s challenge, winning their last nine games to clinch the title. He is the first player from the Premier League to be crowned since Cristiano Ronaldo won in 2008 during his first stint with Manchester United.

With that, Rodri also became the third Spaniard to win the coveted award, ending a 64-year wait for the fans to watch one of their own lift the prestigious award once again. The last time a Spaniard won the Ballon d’Or was back in 1960 when Barcelona’s Luis Suarez—not to be confused with the Uruguayan international’s namesake—lifted the award. The other Spaniard to have won the accolade is Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano—twice in 1957 and 1959.

So, Rodri winning the Ballon d’Or is not only a moment of pride for the fans but also for the Spanish players representing clubs from different leagues in Europe and beyond. Thus, it is not surprising to see so many teammates of Rodri posting congratulatory messages across social media accounts.

Tottenham winger Bryan Gil, currently on loan at Girona, took to his official Instagram account to congratulate the Man City star as well. He reposted Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano’s post on his Instagram story with the emoticons of a Spanish flag, heart and top.

To recognize and celebrate one of his national teammates winning a prestigious award is a lovely gesture from Bryan Gil. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old is currently enjoying his loan spell with Girona. He has played nine times in La Liga thus far this season, scoring a goal. However, the winger has missed the last three games across all competitions with an ankle sprain.

As part of Gil’s new Tottenham contract, the winger has had a £12.8million release clause inserted, and Girona have been given priority to trigger it next summer if they want to.

Having failed to cut the mustard in the Premier League, Spurs fans will hope Gil excels at the Estadio Montilivi throughout the campaign and Girona signs him permanently in 2025.
