Dominic Solanke arguably produced his best performance for Tottenham against Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur came back from 1-0 down to record an emphatic 4-1 win over Aston Villa at home in the Premier League on Sunday.
Despite Aston Villa taking the lead through Morgan Rogers in the first half in what was another moment of poor defending from set-pieces, Ange Postecoglou’s side were able to turn things around after the break. Brennan Johnson got the leveller before Dominic Solanke’s brace gave the hosts breathing space. Substitute James Maddison iced the cake with a wonderful free-kick, lifting the team to seventh in the table.
Ex-Tottenham scout Bryan King waxed lyrical about the performance of Dominic Solanke, citing that this was the kind of performance he has wanted to see since he arrived on a club-record fee from Bournemouth in the summer. He was particularly impressed by the striker’s first goal which helped Spurs make it 2-1.
“This is what we’ve been waiting for,” King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“When a player costs that amount of money, you want to see him produce like that in games against quality opposition.
“He’s been scoring tap-ins, fine. However, his first goal against Villa was quality. It seems that Solanke has suddenly found a bit of form and it was a great result for Tottenham.”
Solanke has made a slow start to life at White Hart Lane, however, his overall displays are what have impressed the fans the most. The 27-year-old has had big boots to fill, having been tasked with replacing the legendary Harry Kane just over a year after his move to Bayern Munich.
On Sunday, the England international showed against Villa why Spurs spent millions to bring him from Bournemouth in the summer. He proved to be the hero of the afternoon by netting a brace for the home side, taking his tally to four Premier League goals in eight appearances so far this season.
Solanke’s first goal against Unai Emery’s men was certainly the most eye-catching for the club as he smartly moved into the box behind the defence and cheekily dinked the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. His second one was an example of strikers being in the right place and at the right time as the Englishman netted from close range off a Richarlison pass.

A double against a quality Villa side would do Solanke’s confidence a world of good. It was a fantastic second-half display from Spurs, one they now need to build upon against Galatasaray and Ipswich Town before the international break.
