Tottenham Hotspur found a way to come back from behind as the North Londoners beat Aston Villa at White Hart Lane on Sunday in a game that looked like it was going away from the Lilywhites.
The North Londoners were looking to return to winning ways on the English top tier following their defeat against Crystal Palace at Shelhurst Park Stadium last weekend, and it was a performance that Ange Postecoglou and the supporters would be proud of as Unai Emery’s high-flying Villa suffered a 4-1 thumping despite conceding an early lead.
Postecoglou’s bold Son sub
While it was a massive win, the talking point in the midst of the game was when the Australian head coach decided to sub off skipper Heung Min Son in the 56th minute when the score was still 1-1. Everyone in the stadium was surprised (including the South Korean himself), but in retrospect it could be to manage his minutes as the 32-year-old has been struggling with injuries off late.
Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray also expressed his amazement at watching Son being subbed off, while he went on to suggest that Villa didn’t allow the South Korean to drift inside and influence the game. Murray also said how the 32-year-old plays his best football from a central role rather than when he sticks to the flank.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Murray said:
“Son looked sharp and good. He has not been allowed to drift. I feel Son is at his best when he’s playing in the number 10 position. I am surprised to see him leave the field.”
Having Son available again is a big boost to the Lilywhites, and his absence could have altered the dynamics of the game yesterday; however, the team showed their depth and resilience as players stepped up to fill in for their skipper and ensure they won the game comfortably.
