Postecoglou hails phyical and mental effort of Tottenham players
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a memorable week at home as they beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup last week before securing an important 4-1 success over Aston Villa in the Premier League. Their triumph versus the Cityzens keeps their goal of winning a trophy alive while the defeat of the Clarets means they remain strongly in contention for a top four finish.
The six goals over the two matches, backing from the fans as well as the results in themselves would have boosted the morale of the dressing room significantly. Nevertheless, it came at a physical cost as the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison had to be subbed off owing to fitness struggles in either of those matches.
That being said, Ange Postecoglou did not hide his satisfaction at the tremendous effort his players have put in over the last few days in the aftermath of their Premier League win against Aston Villa. The Tottenham coach was quoted saying the following in his post-match press conference by Football London.
“The players were really determined to go out there again. They couldn’t wait to get back out on the pitch and start playing again and raising the tempo, raising the intensity, and credit to them.
It’s not easy. We work hard obviously to get them to those levels, but you still need mental capacity to push yourself to those levels. Sometimes it’s easy to leave that in reserve but they left nothing in the tank on Wednesday night and they left nothing in the tank tonight.”
It were indeed a couple of commanding performance by the Tottenham players with several names proving impressive. The midfielders against Manchester City and Aston Villa were particularly on top of their games with Dejan Kulusevski deserving a special mention for his efforts. Of the six goals Spurs scored in their last two outings, three were assisted by the former Juventus star.

The team’s mentality seems to have radically changed for the better over the last few months and a lot of that credit goes to Ange Postecoglou. The Australian manager is more than deserving of a trophy come the end of the season and it will be interesting to see if the players can sustain the manager’s demands for the next six odd months of 2024/25.
